Team Sonic Racing Team Up Trailer!

Sega just released a new trailer for Team Sonic Racing. This one shows off more gameplay and the delay for this game has really shown for the better. After this trailer I am hyped up more than ever for this game. Are you sold on TSR? Let us know in the official topic!

Genesis Mini details revealed

At this year's Sega Fes, more details were unveiled about the mysterious Genesis/Mega Drive Mini console. If you remember, its release was initially delayed for quality reasons. The initial theory (and fear) was that this was simply going to be a reskinned clone console from the dreaded AtGames. Well, put those fears to rest.

Here's a quick rundown of some significant details:

  • Releases September 19th worldwide
  • Emulation handled by M2! (Currently working on the Sega Ages line for Switch, previously the 3D line for 3DS, and much more)
  • 40 games total (10 revealed so far)
  • Western package includes two 3-button USB controllers, retailing for $79.99 USD
  • Outputs at 720p and 480p
  • Save state support, up to 4 per game
  • New menu music produced by Yuzo Koshiro! (of Streets of Rage fame)

Of the 10 games announced, Japan gets Sonic 2 while the west gets Sonic 1 and Mean Bean Machine. Though, I think it's reasonable to assume Sonic 2 will also be included in the western release. Sonic 3 & Knuckles... um, maybe not.

Other highlights of the revealed lineup include Gunstar Heroes and Castlevania: Bloodlines. This will be the first time Bloodlines has been rereleased since, well, ever. The Japanese version also includes Namco's Wrestleball (aka Powerball in the US). This confirms both Konami and Bandai-Namco are onboard. (Fingers crossed for Contra and Rocket Knight.)

The game lineup seems like it's going to be quite different between Japan and the west. The Japanese lineup includes games that never got an English release, such as Madou Monogatari and Rent A Hero. Not just that, but Japan also gets the 6-button controller in either a one-controller or two-controller package.

For further details, check out the official websites: Japan - US - Europe (And here's the portion of the livestream where it was introduced and discussed.)

Update(3/29/19): Fans are working to revive Sonic Runners

The revival attempt is currently in closed alpha, but it's looking like Sonic Runners may yet get a new lease on life. Runners is an official Sonic Team game that's no longer playable today. This is good news for fans who liked the game if it pans out. Click to get all the details!

Rumor: New Sonic cartoon coming this year!

Coming from the Toyshiz instagram, new Sonic toys at the New York World Toy Fair showed up this weekend, where the Twitter account flat out says, these will release alongside "A new cartoon", most likely meaning this new series will be using the modern Sonic designs, rather than the Boom ones. This backs up a leak from Sega themselves last year:

It also makes sense to start getting toylines ready for the new series around this time. Sega's annual Sonic panel is happening at SXSW in about a month, so we'll probably find out more soon.

Have a Sonic Pocket Adventure flyer from E3 1999

Mollie L Patterson has released some scans of flyers advertising various SNK games from E3 1999. Sonic is among them, along with Sega's Puyo Pop and many more. Check out the full lineup of scans on her site.

Sonic Pocket Adventure was a portable outting for SNK's ill-fated Neo Geo Pocket Color. It was the first Sonic game developed for a non-Sega platform. The game is largely based on Sonic 2, with a soundtrack borrowed from S3&K.

Sonic Team boss interested in a Sonic Adventure remake.

Sonic Adventure is now over 20 years old!

It was quite a showpiece for the Dreamcast when it launched and was the first proper 3D Sonic game released that was stunning graphically. I still think it's quite a fun game but it does show its age. Animations are very clunky as games from the 90s were and there are other minor problems such as the camera and glitches. It doesn't look smooth even when bumped up to 1080p like the remastered version for PS3/360 or on PC.

Speaking with Retro Gamer, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka said he believes the first Sonic Adventure “is a unique game offering even 20 years after its release.” At the same time though, he “can see the rough edges it has, which really makes me want to remake it again.”

Iizuka stated:

“It was the first highspeed 3D action game that also featured a scenario highlighted with six different stories, the A-life Chao, six unique styles of gameplay – it is a unique game offering even 20 years after its release. At the time, it also wasn’t just a solitary software release, it was the title to bring people to the Dreamcast and we were given the budget to make something to showcase the hardware. However, it was the very first 3D game that we worked on and looking at it now I can see the rough edges it has, which really makes me want to remake it again.”

I don't think this will happen anytime soon but it does seem like something they may visit in the future. With the recent success of Crash, Spyro, and Ratchet & Clank remakes it kinda is a no brainer they would look into this. Would you like it to be a 1:1 remake like Crash N Sane Trillogy or more of a reimagining like Ratchet & Clank? Let us know in the forum!
