Zifei Resigns - Tristan 3:30 am CST, 9-4-99
It's a sad day here at Sonic HQ; for Zifei has resigned as President of Sonic HQ. Taking his place will be Tony.

Sonic Saga Press Release - Tristan 9:45 am CST, 9-3-99
You can read the article here, but here's what's in it in a nutshell: Several jobs have been cut, and Dash says that the comic will be of top quality from here on in.

Penders: "SU Was Doomed from the Get-Go" - Tristan 9:45 am CST, 9-3-99
This was bound to happen. First some of the Sonic site webmasters call this latest Sonic cartoon incarnation terrible, now Ken Penders has gone on record saying it as well:

If anyone wants to know where to point blame regarding SU, one need look in the direction of the producers of the series. They're the real villains of this piece. Sega wanted to have a SONIC cartoon on the air, and in order to do that, they either had to go along with the program at DiC or it just wouldn't have happened. Subsequently, lots of decisions were made for all the wrong reasons. I myself know a lot of what really happened, but I can't say yet because of promises made.

There's always the chance some other Sonic cartoon will emerge again, because if there is a demand waiting to be filled, someone will always seek to capitalize on it.

If you like SU, fine. If you don't, that's understandable.

These are pretty strong words, and that combined with all the negative feedback from fans means it's no wonder SU is at an "Off the Air" status in the UK.

The Full Story About SU - Vector 1:07 pm CST, 9-2-99
The release of SU has been rather confusing, thanks to numerous delays and the fact that it doesn't seem to be showing on the same time and channel in any 2 areas. I'm hoping to clear things up with this report.

First, SU is not part of a network. When we say that it's showing on WB or UPN, we mean that it's usually on a local station that is affiliated with one of those networks. Those stations have more open areas in their schedule than a station affiliated with a larger network. SU could show up on a Fox station or a fully independent station, but we've heard no reports of this happening so far.

It seems that the long delay in the United States was caused by Sonic Underground's distributor, Bohbot Entertainment. Bohbot wanted to make SU part of a 2-hour block of programs called BKN2. BKN1 ("action shows" marketed to older boys) and BKN2 (shows with less action, marketed to girls and younger boys) were supposed to be sold to competing local stations in the same time slot. Apparently, things haven't worked out exactly as they planned. Personally, I think this was a stupid idea, because real people's tastes aren't predicted so easily by stereotypes. Fortunately, it seems that SU is showing up in some places on its own, so Bohbot may be allowing stations to buy shows individually, instead of forcing them to buy the entire block.

As Zifei mentioned earlier, you really have to check your local listings to find the show. You can find searchable listings at msn.com, go.com, ultimatetv.com, and tvguide.com. Many (if not most) areas don't seem to be getting SU yet, but that may change in the next month.

SU May Return - Vector 1:06 pm CST, 9-2-99
Dr. Zac told us today that he didn't mean SU was cancelled in the UK, but just off the air. He has a feeling that it's not gone... just in the rotation.

More SA Toys! - Zifei 9:12 pm CST, 9-1-99
ReSaurus today released 2 more conceptual designs of the upcoming Sonic Adventure toys. Here are Sonic and Knuckles.

SA International. - Zifei 9:11 pm CST, 9-1-99
As it turns out, one of the four games Sonic Team announced will be none other than Sonic Adventure: International (American, European versions). This means there will only be one unknown game to be announced (the other 2 are Neo Geo Sonic and NiGHTS 2).

Sonic & Sally Poll. - Zifei 9:09 pm CST, 9-1-99
Remember the Sally/Sonic poll Archie asked for on their website sometimes ago? Well, here are the results directly from Ken Penders thanks to Rick 2Tails:

I talked to Ken on the phone yesterday & he said the results were roughly 50% to keep the status quo, a little over 25% for Sonic & Sally to marry, & a little under 25% for them to split up.

Well, so that's that...

More On SU. - Zifei 8:59 pm CST, 9-1-99
Dr. Zac is telling us that Sonic Underground is being canned in the UK. The only possible reason is its poor rating.

Mettle Sonic is telling us that Sonic Underground will be showing up in Canada soon.

SU On UPN. - Zifei 4:40 pm CST, 8-31-99
This IS confirmed. In some areas (such as Kansas City), Sonic Underground is showing on UPN instead of WB. So check your local listings!

SU Times. - Zifei 3:40 pm CST, 8-31-99
Boy, people are lazy these days. I had about 16 emails concerning when SU airs in their respected areas. Well here's a run down of local times:

Memphis, TN: 1:00pm
OKC, OK: 6:30am
New York/Buffalo: NOT ON
Augusta, GA: 7:00am
Jacksonville, FL: NOT ON
Lake Zurich, IL: NOT ON
Los Angeles: NOT ON
Santa Barbara, CA: NOT ON
Detroit, MI: 6:00am
Denver, CO: NOT ON

As you can see, a lot of the places won't be able to see Sonic Underground at all. It looks to be that Sonic Underground came as a local programming package instead of national. That would explain why a lot of places don't seem to have it.

No Early DC Sales - Tristan 3:00 pm CST, 8-31-99
If you're wondering if there's a chance DC merchandise might be sole prior to 9.9.99, well, not a chance. If retailers are caught doing so, they are fined 50 grand per location (example: 10 Babbages stores, and 3 sell early, that's a $150,000 fine to the company). And that's a lot to risk. So, prepare to wait in line on the launch date, and no earlier. Thanks to DC Tech Pages.

Official: DC Orders at 300,000 - Tristan 3:00 pm CST, 8-31-99
Sega of American has announced that pre-orders have topped 300,000. They expect to break a 24 hour entertainment sales record, currently held by Star Wars: Episode 1, and also expect 400,000 units to be sold in the first 30 days of launch.

SU On The Net! - Matthew Macclain email 6:35 pm CST, 8-30-99
If you missed the first episode of Sonic Underground "Beginnings", you can click here and head to Matthew's website and download the entire episode in Real Video format.

Knuckles Comics. - DJ Mike email 4:05 pm CST, 8-30-99
Earlier today, Ken Penders sent me an e-mail, addressing the recent situation regarding there being no Knuckles #33 listed in this month's Previews:

Knuckles was pushed back a week, causing the release date to fall into November, and thus pushing the solicitation for it back into the November Previews instead of the October one.

In other words, Knuckles #33 will be listed alongside #34 in next month's Previews, giving fans two issues [in one month]!

SU On The Air! - Zifei 3:55 pm CST, 8-30-99
Today, Sonic Underground hit the airwaves, becoming the 3rd Sonic cartoon to be aired. The first episode aired was "Beginnings", the story about the basic plot of Sonic Underground. Click here to goto SonicUnderground.net for more info. If you missed it today, get up early tomorrow morning. Also, as a reminder, the Jaleel White chat at TVGuide is tonight (check last week's news for location).

SU Reviewed. - Brian S. 6:29 pm CST, 8-29-99
Sonic's T.V. Adventures
(a short reveiw straight from the new Offical Dreamcast Magazine)

His Hedgehogness spins back onto afternoon T.V.

Whats super-day-glo green, hopelessy hyperactive, and is the closest thing you're ever likely to get to an animated likeness of The Cure front man Robert Smith? That'd be Manic, the newly-born younger brother of Sonic, who's making his return to the airwavs in a new cartoon series called Sonic Underground. Sonic's whacked out sibling isn't the only new character addition since The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (also created by Inspector Gadget animation house Dic) left the air. In the new series, Manic, Sonic, and another new arrival, Sonia, have forged a band (Oh dear_Ed), and now spend their days 'underground' and undercover banging out glam rock tunes to cheer up woeful townsfolk who are lorded over by the evil Sheiff Robotnik. In short: It's Sonic meets The partridge Family - so you shouldn't expect it to be a shred like Sonic Adventure. Sonic Underground will be airing in more than 182 cities nationwide when it hits the airwavs on August 29. Check your local listing for exact airtimes nd stations - just keep the sequined clothes and gaint wigs stowed well away.

Remember, Sonic Underground starts showing on WB Network tomorrow morning at 6:00am local time.

SA Toys! - Zifei 11:49 pm CST, 8-27-99
This is the official word from ReSaurus about the Sonic Adventure toys they're making:

Coming this Fall! A new line of 3 3/4" action figures based on the iconic characters from the new Sega Dreamcast video game, Sonic Adventure. The line will consist of Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, and Knuckles the Echidna. Each figure will come with an individually sculpted base and a "floating ring" that will complete the look of the set.

"We're extremely excited about Sonic," says ReSaurus President, Doug Sapp. "Sonic is the mascot of the new Dreamcast system and the property fits in perfectly with the ReSaurus vision. Taking classic video game characters and turning them into awesome 3D toys is what ReSaurus does best."

Also, product designer Ken (not Penders) told us that:

They will have ball jointed shoulders, swivel hands, swivel hips, head. Each figure has about seven points, except for Tails who has eight (the tails). The sculpts turned out pretty cool and production is underway. They are probably going to ship in late October.

I feel pretty certain that if the Sonic Series One does well then we will do a second series. Of course we won't know that until the first series hits stores around Thanksgiving. But it should be cool and hopefully people will be stoked to get them.

You can view the pre-production Tails figure design by clicking here. More info next month.

Sonic #79 Preview. - WB 8:40 pm CST, 8-27-99
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #79
by Bollers, Fry, & Pepoy
"Sonic Adventure - Part One"
Inspired by the popular "Sonic Adventure" game for the hot Sega "Dreamcast" platform! When Nate Morgan uses his telecrate technology to infiltrate Dr. Robotnik's computer network, he receives transmissions that send shivers down the Freedom Fighter's spines: the dastardly Doc has ordered an excavation somewhere near the mysterious Cat Country leading them to believe he may have found the Hidden City of the Ancients! Nate and The Freedom Fighters are immediately dispatched to quell the threat all, that is, except for Amy Rose, who the others feel is too young. Amy is outraged Tails is allowed to go on the mission, and he's the same age as her! Will that stop her? Heck, no! Amy calls upon the powers of the Ring of Acorns to make herself older transforming herself into her "Dreamcast" counterpart, and depleting the ring of all its energy in the process! The price is a harsh one, as the ring has been used in the service of healing the Queen. Fearing ill effects, Nate insists Amy comes along on the mission with them. Can they survive Amy's amazing transformation? For that matter, can Amy?! It’s a journey of discovery that will lead our fearless heroes to the startling new world depicted in the Sonic Adventure Dreamcast game! PLUS: The senses-shattering conclusion to the epic "Tales of the Great War" back-up series by Ken Penders, Chris Allan, and Jim Amash.
FC, 32pg $1.79

Queen Acorn will probably pass away. And now we have a Amy/Sally problem...

According to Famitsu Weekly, the Dreamcast had almost topped the Playstation in sales for the first half of this month! The DC had 78,108 sales, while the Playstation came in a close first place with 78,434.

Why the reason for the jump, you ask? Well, it wasn't SA, it was Namco's new fighting title Soul Calibur. Thanks to Next Generation.

SA Re-release. - Zifei 4:09 pm CST, 8-26-99

It is also unclear when the updates will cease, or if the media files will be deleted. There should be an announcement sometime next week on this, and I'll bring you the info.

New Poll! - Zifei 3:10 pm CST, 8-23-99
In the last poll, we asked you how much time you spend on Sonic everyday, here are the results after 142 people voted:

1) 4+ hours (58) 41%
2) 2 hours (25) 18%
3) Less than 1 hour (22) 15%
4) 1 hour (20) 14%
5) 4 hours (2) 1%

Most people spend more than 4 hours?! Wow, we have a lot more hard-core Sonic fans than I expected. Now for the next poll. This is very important for us to know. As our future graphics design depend on it. The question is: How fast is you internet connection? If the majority is above 36.6kps, we'll go with a lot of graphics, if not, we'll cut down. So go vote now!

More Info On ST Games! - Zifei 6:15 pm CST, 8-20-99
The four new Sonic Team games will be shown to the public next month. But we already have some semi-solid information on what you should expect:

NiGHTS 2 - the sequel to NiGHTS.
Neo Geo Sonic - 2D Sonic platform game for Neo Geo Pocket Color.
New Title - your guess is as good as ours.
Sonic the Fighters 2 - This one is rumored only, and it's for the arcade.

More info on September 3rd, when the first game will be announced.

Breaking News: New ST Games! - Tristan 2:15 pm CST, 8-20-99
The Sonic Team Updated its website today with some Japanese text and four new logos. See the page here.

What could this mean? Well, Gaming Age is reporting that the four logos represent FOUR NEW GAMES, of which NiGHTS 2 and an arcade title may be two! And the Sonic Team has gone on record saying that as well!

These titles would be shown in the Japanese publications Famitsu Weekly and Dreamcast Magazine in all of their 4 September issues, one at a time. Following September, the games would be shown at the Tokyo Game Show this fall, and at JAMMA, a show featuring arcade games.

Remember, at this point it appears to be speculation. Sonic HQ News will stay on top of this breaking story, but for now, if anyone out there can read Japanese, please email us and tell us what was said on the Sonic Team logo page.

SegaSonic Arcade in the UK? - Ray 10:14 pm CST, 8-19-99
A few days ago, Sonic HQ learned from Ray about the release of SegaSonic Arcade in the UK as "Sonic the Coin-Op." The release was announced in an issue of Fleetway's Sonic the Comic. You can view a scan by clicking here.

Unfortunately, this isn't new news. The scan actually came from a January 1994 issue, not a recent one. Apparently, this release was very limited, or perhaps even cancelled.

In case you have not heard about it, SegaSonic Station is holding a petition for a 'Sonic Jam 2' which would bring SegaSonic Arcade and Sonic the Fighters to a home console, along with Knuckles' Chaotix and the Mega CD version of Sonic CD. To visit the petition site, click here.

Pre-Order Stoppage! - Tristan 3:00 pm CST, 8-19-99
It was inevitable, but now, Babbages and Software Etc. has now officially stopped taking pre-orders. Now, people wanting a Dreamcast will have to wait for the second or third shipment of consoles from Sega.

Why is this happening? Because the company (Babbages and Software Etc. are one in the same) don't want to bog down Sega with more orders, especially since they think it's going to be tough to get the 350,000 projected consoles pre-ordered out on time. Notice how this number is far higher that Sega's announcement of 200,000 pre-orders.

Does this mean stores like EB may do this too? Absolutely. In fact, EB may have to in order to 'guarantee' everyone who pre-ordered a console to have theirs on the 9th.

What should you do now? As of this point, your best bet is to go to stores like CompUSA, Best Buy, and other large chain retailers, as they can probably get you a console on the 9th. More info as we get it. Thanks to Seganet.

Be Sonic For A Day! - Zifei 11:39 pm CST, 8-18-99
Be Sonic for one day, and win a life time supply of Dreamcast first party games. That's right, if you live in the San Francisco area, show up on August 23rd. Here's what Sega's press release said:

WHEN: Monday, August 23, 1999
TIME: Line-up begins at 10:00 am; Prizes awarded at 12:00 noon
WHY: To show Sega that you are the biggest fan out there and to win free stuff!

REMEMBER: You will only be eligible to win a Dreamcast if you go BLUE!

For more information, please visit the Sega website at Sega.com or e-mail Sonic the Hedgehog personally at sonic@sega.com. See you there!

DC Demo Disk. - Zifei 11:35 pm CST, 8-18-99
Well, according to IGNDC, Emerald Coast, the first level of Sonic Adventure, will be playable in the Dreamcast demo disk. Packed in with a new Dreamcast.

...Uh Oh. - Tristan 8:55 am CST, 8-18-99
Sony and Nintendo has dropped the price of their systems to $99, in an effort to apparently divert attention from the Dreamcast.

And it appears to be working, as they are "Flying off the shelves," said a store manager. Sega is not concerned about it at this time. Thanks to Next Generation.

First Wave of Legal Simplenet MP3s! - Tristan 8:35 am CST, 8-18-99
JD Harding's perfect plan has worked! He has started to crank out legal Sonic music on his Simplenet site. You can check them out here.

How did he do it, you ask? Well, JD's recording MIDIs into the MP3 format using a powerful soundcard for eliminate the plagues of usual MIDI music as much as possible. It's a lot like what AJ Freda is doing with some of the MP3s on SegaSonic.Net. Expect to see a complete archive in the coming weeks.

Sara's Voice. - Tony 10:03 pm CST, 8-17-99

Fleetway Comics Info. - Zifei 9:13 pm CST, 8-17-99
Way back in the Spring of 1999, we did a special about the Fleetway Comic management. How it's messing up the comic. Lew Stringer, one of the main writers wrote us a letter. Sort of a view from the other perspective:

Good to see your Sonic page; well designed and enthusiastic, but spoilt by the feature on Fleetway's Sonic. Your so-called "reliable" source couldn't be further off the mark if he/she tried. I'm sorry you don't like my stories, and you're entitled to your comments of course, but your writer's attitude to Debbie Tate was undeserved.

Here's the true relaible facts; none of the cost-cutting measures taken on the comic (axing of editorial/letters; reprints; less pages, etc) were Debbie's choice. Decisions like that are made by the Marketing Manager and Publisher. The Editor would prefer them not to happen. No doubt about that. But the decision is out of her hands, with no room for discussion, believe me.

Similarly, the decision to replace other Sega strips with all-Sonic related stories was made by senior management and Sega itself. However, in that instance, the decision was welcomed by the majority of readers, who had often requested more Sonic-related stories in the comic.

The attitude of your feature writer is ill-informed, bitter, and very immature. I know you took his/her word on trust, but it is inaccurate in the extreme. I can guess who (FW) might be, and I suspect he has his own axe to grind, but hate-mongering the wrong person isn't very noble.

I hope you don't mind me sending in this response. I don't wish you guys any ill will but I just felt that needed clearing up.

We'll glad to see that some official people actually visit our page from time to time. And we'll let you decide on what to believe on this issue.

SegaSonic the Hedgehog. - Ray 12:39 am CST, 8-17-99

Metal Sonic -- Martin Burke (computer aided)

All the staffers agree that the voices are a bit too high pitched. But you should be able to get used to them very fast. A few changes were made:

Sera is now Sara.
The part where Knuckles says "sh*t" is now "Oh no! I've been hit!"

The other mature scenes (Sonic giving the finger and Tails/Sera scene) are still in.

Uncle Chuck In SU. - Tikal email 10:59 pm CST, 8-16-99
Okay, if anyone saw Sonic Super Special #10 with the Sonic Underground story, it was said that Sonic lived with his Uncle Chuck before he met Sonia and Manic. Though some though this was something Achie threw into the SU storyline, the story behind Uncle Chuck is, indeed, true. SU Episode #38 "Back to the Beginning Again" features the story behind Sonic Underground's beginning...and Uncle Chucks appearence. Although the english episode is not yet released in UK, there is a copy of the french version of the episode here..

Sonic Ideal. - Zifei 6:39 pm CST, 8-16-99
Encarnacion will be hosting the much hyped fan comic, Sonic Ideal. You can click here to go to the main page of Sonic Ideal. From what I have seen of this comic, I can go on to say that this looks like a comic made directly by Sega themselves.

Fan Shorts - Tristan 5:09 pm CST, 8-16-99
JD Harding of Tolwyn.net recently had a problem with a Pocket Monsters site- they copied JD's entire site design. If you're a legal buff, you know that means they're almost asking for a lawsuit. JD took action immediately, and now the site in question is "Temporarily down due to technical difficulties".

You may have heard of a fan game called "Dr. Robotnik in Rebellion". Well, a Special Edition is being made, and Maim Entertainment, the minds behind the project, need your help. They need MIDI composers. If you think you're up for the job, E-Mail them.

Sonic Adventure Toys. - Zifei 12:28 am CST, 8-16-99
ALM on the Sonic Newsgroup is reporting from the Comic Con that:

ReSaurus has gotten the rights to make 3 3/4" SA figures (unfortunately, there will only be a Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails). Another company, Toy Island, has gotten the rights to make larger Sonic toys.

According to the Sonic HQ Staffers at the Comic Con, a lot of Sonic Adventure merchandise (Chao doll, music cds) were on sale. But they sold out before Saturday.

More Sonic Anime Voices. - Jet 12:08 am CST, 8-16-99
More impressions from the San Diego Comic Con about the Sonic Anime English voices:

Tails sounds like he's got a minor cold.

Knuckles also sound far too high-pitched than expected

But Jet said that you should get used to the voices very fast.

More Knuckles In SU? - DJ Mike email 6:58 pm CST, 8-15-99
Sunday, 15th August, 8:56am GMT - just a few minutes after "Friend or Foe?", an extra-special episode of Sonic Underground finished airing.

Why extra-special? Perhaps because for the first time ever, Knuckles has appeared in a Sonic cartoon, and it wasn't that bad either. His voice was a little higher in tone than I would've expected, perhaps due to the fact that the voice artist is the same one who does Cyrus ("Tangled Webs", "Come Out Wherever You Are").

Interestingly, the ending (which I won't spoil) does give the possibility that Knuckles may appear in future episodes. Time will tell...

SSS#11 News. - HQ Staffers 2:00 am CST, 8-15-99

Sonic Anime Voices. - HQ Staffers 1:55 am CST, 8-15-99
The HQ team at the San Diego Comic Con is reporting back that the voice of Sonic in the American version of the Sonic Anime is down right terrible. They discribe it as:

Try holding your nose and make the highest pitched voice you can.

More on this later today. Including impressions of Tails' and Knuckles' voices.

Wizard On SA Crossover. - Duo P.email 7:09 pm CST, 8-12-99
I was thumbing through the new issue of Wizard: The Comics Magazine which I got yesterday, and came across this article on SA:

The Hedgehog Is Back!

Sonic Adventure updates Sega's hyper-kinetic star and throws him into a series of three-dimensional worlds that fly by at fantastic speeds-the Dreamcast graphics must be seen to be believed! There are six characters to chose from this time around: Supersonic the Hedgehog, Tails the Fox, Amy Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna (an anteater), Big the Cat, E102r, a C3PO-like robot. Most of the gameplay is based around Station Square, a geographic hub where Sonic can interact with other characters, solve puzzles and find hidden level entrances to begin each stage. Once you're on a stage, you maneuver along gravity defying tracks, collecting rings and rocketing off launch pads that propel Sonic at super-speeds.

In addition to the normal gameplay, Sonic Adventure features puzzle-like subgames, including pinball and skiing segments. The most interesting subgame is a Pokemon-esque pet-hatching simulation that takes place in Chaos Gardens. By carefully placing Chaos eggs found in other levels, Sonic can incubate and hatch baby Chaos monsters.

The basic gameplay of Sonic Adventure is essentially the same as earlier installments in Sega's classic series-Sonic still does his signature spins, jumps and super-dashes. Part nostalgia trip and part fast-paced adventure, Sonic Adventure is sure to be a smooth, challenging game.

And no, the "Supersonic the Hedgehog" and "Amy Hedgehog" things were not typos on my part. Neither was anything else.

In the sidebox under the two pictures (one of Sonic in a blue blur. I think he's either spinning or screeching to a halt. And one of Knuckles) it says: SONIC BOOM Yep, the world's fastest (and bluest) hedgehog is back in what looks to be his most harried adventure yet.

And in the "Try It" box it said: Remember all those Sonic The Hedgehog games from a couple of years ago? Wanna relive some of that magic? Pick up Sonic Adventure!

Stolar Departure: Public Reaction - Tristan 1:50 pm CST, 8-12-99
The DC Tech Pages Message Board has a ton of reaction to this big turn of events. Here are a select few:

From 'nickt':

I just don't get it!! Regaedless of what Mr. Stolar did to deserve this, what is with the timing of this drastic measure. Why would any intelligent company fire their COO, one month before the biggest launch in entertainment history - is this supposed to garner loyalty, and trust in the Sega Brand Name...The timing of this announcement couldn't be worse if there was a 3 year old running the company. If there where differences between Mr. Stolar and Japan they surely could have waited until after the launch!!

From Solid Snake:

I admit, that a little part of me has lost respect for Sega in general. When will SOJ learn. Nintendo of Japan couldn't run the North American market, so why does SOJ think they can. This is totally crazy! I just got a little less excited about the DC launch. Man, I almost want to stop buying import games to show my anger. Probably won't do that, but I have lost alot of respect at least for SOJ. Grow up Sega!

From Sega2000:

Here's the quote he (Stolar) said about SOJ...

"Dreamcast to date has been a failure in Japan. I'm not going to lie about that. The price drop has helped; now they need the software. You know what? I'm proud and glad that an American is saving the company, and that's ironic, because Sega was started by four Americans."

Is that enough to get the president of SOA fired? I've lost a lot of respect for Sega today.

From a very angry Sonikka:

My DC buzz is dead! Firing a guy for doing everything right is pathetic, and is one of the reasons I disrespect SONY. Now Sega does the same thing that Sony pulled in 95 and just because I'm a diehard SEGA fan I should accept it? I think not.

Bernie took the heat for killing Saturn and then rebuilt SoA into a legitimate company and this is how you repay him? SEGA, I am repaying you by not buying a DC on 9-9-99. Will I buy a DC? I don't know, but I won't be getting one anytime soon. I'll just stick to the import DC I have and play only 3rd party games.SEGA you have done the impossible. YOU HAVE KILLED MY DC BUZZ!...I thought you learned with the Saturn that you can't run the American market from Tokyo. I hate to say this, but I think the old SEGA is back!

These are some very harsh words, and there are many more of these reactions right now, and definitely much more to come. Realize that details are still sketchy as some questions have yet to be answered. More as we get it.

Stolar Departure May be a Prank! - Tristan 10:32 am CST, 8-12-99
On the DC Tech Pages Message Board, a forumer named Dreamcaster made a very big observation about Stolar being fired:

Hey! Didn't Sega pull the same stunt in Japan with Yukawa-san? It was all publicity!!! This may be the case again here!...It's just a wild guess but that may be the case...

Again, this is not confirmed, and this may or may not be true. Sonic HQ News is following the situation closely, and futher updates will come as we get them.

Neo Geo Sonic Shots! - Zifei 10:25 pm CST, 8-11-99
SNK released the first Neo Geo Pocket Color Sonic screens. They look kinda weird. Since it's only at around 150 colors instead of 64 ala Genesis (wait a min, shouldn't it look better then?). For more images, click here thanks to IGN Pocket. The game will ship on December 1 of this year. It is interesting to note that there is a "duel room" option in the game. And the game might also hook up with Sonic Adventure on the DC.

Bernie Stolar Axed! - Zifei 10:15 pm CST, 8-11-99
In the strangest move I've ever seen, Sega Enterprise fired (not really confirmed, but it's 100% sure that he's not with the company, and he didn't resign) Bernie Stolar, COO of Sega of America. The exact cause is still unknown at the moment. Click here to read the official Sega press release. The new COO is Toshiro Kezuka.

SA Strategy Guide. - Zifei 5:11 pm CST, 8-11-99
Sega signed a deal with publisher Brady Games to have the exclusive right to publish Dreamcast strategy guides. Sonic Adventure's strategy guide will be the first one published and available at the DC launch.

Naka On Piracy. - Zifei 5:09 pm CST, 8-11-99
Yuji Naka recently had an interview with Game Week about piracy and emulation. Here's the most important part:

Naka: I once made a Famicom (NES) emulator for the Mega-Drive (Genesis). It was just for my own personal play, and I couldn't play every game with it. It was just for fun, but it was fun to call people over and show them Mario running around on a Mega-Drive.

GameWeek: You're not the only one doing that kind of switch. I recently saw a Game Boy cartridge that had Sonic.

Naka: I have Sonic for Famicom. I knew that I really was important when they started pirating my games.

Now Naka-san didn't say that it's ok to emulate and copy. He just doesn't make a big deal out of it. Source: Neo Green Hill Zone.

Sonic Crashes Sony's Party! - Zifei 11:19 pm CST, 8-10-99
This has to be the funniest thing to come by in the game industry in a long long time. Appearantly, Sony held a private golf party today. Only to have Sega employee dressed as Sonic come and crash it. Click here for the full story and pictures. The OLD Sega is back..:-)

Sonic #76 Release Date! - Zifei 6:39 pm CST, 8-10-99

SegaSonic.Net Update - Tristan 6:30 pm CST, 8-10-99
I have received an E-Mail from AJ Freda, who heads SegaSonic.Net, and this is what he said:

None of the content of the site is gone. Just the index.htm mainly because the site is having some FTP problems that need to be sorted out. I tried uploading a new index.htm and it wouldn't go (just replaced the old one with a blank file) so I decided to delete the index so people would still have access to anything they needed.

The page is now accessible sans an index.htm.

Jake Lloyd = Tails! - Zifei 4:32 pm CST, 8-10-99
It is now confirmed (rumored about a week ago) that Jake Lloyd (ie young Vader) will be voicing Tails in Sonic Adventure. This is pretty ironic since both of them hold the title "The Chosen One".

The DCs are Running Out! - Tristan 2:05 pm CST, 8-10-99
Gaming Age is reporting that if you don't hurry, you miss out on a Dreamcast! Here's an snippet of the article:

With the DC already destroying the all time pre-order records, why in the world would the campaign end 1 month shy of the console's release? Well, because once the maximum number of pre-orders is reached, then the stores will not be able to guarantee the console's availability.

However, when and if this occurs, your name can be put on a reserve list, which eliminates the 10 bucks you would have to put down for a regular pre-order. However, that doesn't mean you're guaranteed a DC on 9.9.99.

Where's SegaSonic.Net? - Tristan 2:05 pm CST, 8-10-99
And as Sonic Pandemonium has returned, another major Sonic site has disappeared without notice. SegaSonic.Net has not been available for access in the past 8+ hours. It is worth noting that the index page, as well as several other important elements, had disappeared yesterday. More info as it becomes available.

Sonic Pandemonium Is Back! - Zifei 12:57 pm CST, 8-10-99
The page is now located here, on a completely new server. Here's what Soneec, the page owner said:

There are still a few broken links and pages not up yet but for the most part, it is back. I will be on vacation until the 16th however so don't send me too much stuff and I am not excepting any fan submitted stuff yet. Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to rebuild this page or it never would have happened. You fans are the coolest. Well, I'm off now but thanks again.

As you can see, it's back!

If you're going to the San Diego Comic Con, this is what you should expect from Ken Penders:

I'll be located in Artists Alley, at Table E-3. Unlike most cons, I won't have the usual variety of back issues available. The emphasis here will be on sketches, original art and promoting THE LOST ONES. (The only books I will have are THE LOST ONES SNEAK PREVIEW, a few of the most recent KNUCKLES, SONIC SUPER SPECIAL #7, a couple of SONIC issues yet to be determined, and maybe a STAR TREK or two I've worked on, and that's it.)

Also, don't forget to bring you comics for him to sign!

Sonic Zone Store. - Zifei 2:40 am CST, 8-7-99
It looks like Suneet of the Sonic Zone will start a Sonic Online Store despite strong warnings from a bunch of people that this could lead to a Sega backlash on the Sonic Internet Community. He plans to invest $400 from the start. You can go order from his page when he get it up. Or you can wait about a month and get it legally from a gaming store or Sega.com.

Sonic Pandemonium Shutdown Fallout! - Tristan 2:50 pm CST, 8-6-99
Tom's Sonic and NiGHTS page is now gone following XOOM shutting down SP. He says that from here on in, he will be working on his hacking section at the SSRG, and his Sonic Underground section on The Sonic Zone.

This very interesting turn of events, and Sonic HQ News will let you know if any other sites go down due to the SP shutdown.

Neo Geo Sonic Confirmed! - Zifei 2:48 pm CST, 8-6-99
We reported this rumor about 3 month ago, but today, SNK confirmed that a new Sonic the Hedgehog game will be coming to its Neo Geo Pocket Color handheld system (out now) by the end of this year. The title of the game is unknown, but is tradition 2D Sonic and all new (not a port). According to sources in Japan, a Sega internal team (not Sonic Team) is making the game. Source SNK/GameFan. More on this next week.

Major Rumor! - Somebody 11:15 pm CST, 8-5-99
You know about the secret lieutenant of Eggman's in #78? Well, a spicy rumor directly from someone close to Archie reveals that this secret character might not be so secret after all. He's not Metal Sonic or Knuckles, he's more like an uncle to Sonic himself...again, this is a rumor, so don't believe it just yet. Just keep it in mind.

Sonic Presents? - Zifei 4:52 pm CST, 8-5-99
Probably in an attempt to attract more Knuckles readers from the Sonic mainstream, Archie added the Sonic the Hedgehog Presents to the Knuckles cover title. With that SA Sonic logo right beside it, just like the old Knuckles mini-series. Will this help out the sells? We hope so.

SA A Pack In? - Zifei 4:33 pm CST, 8-5-99
Recent rumors on the net point to that Sonic Adventure will be a pack in for the DC on 9-9-99. Here are the clues:

  • Sonic Adventure is about $15 in Japan right now, production cost is around $3.
  • SoA COO Bernie Stolar: "The only game with online capability at launch is Sonic Adventure."
  • SoA COO Bernie Stolar: "Online gaming will be a MAJOR marketing push."

OK, so that's not much to go by, but insiders also suggest that Sega will have a packin game. So just don't be surprised if Sega does make this announcement in 2 weeks.

  • DC 'Net Plans - Tristan updated 3:40pm CST, 8-4-99
3:40 PM CST: This is the official word from Sega's web site.

EARLY TODAY: Here's the plan courtesy Next Generation:

As an incentive to use Sega’s preferred provider, gamers signing up with AT&T WorldNet service for use with the console will receive a free Dreamcast keyboard. Unfortunately, online gaming will not be provided on the Sega Dreamcast Network from the outset. "We’re not announcing any dates regarding online gaming at this time," said Stolar. "Full online gaming will be available next year. Sega is committed to providing triple A titles to its customers, games that push the envelope."

How much will using AT&T through your Dreamcast cost you? AT&T will keep its standard pricing policy for the service. The cost weighs in at $19.95 for 150 hours of access, or an unlimited access price plan for $21.95.

All functions available on the Japanese equivalent will be there in the US. From day one, downloads for the VMU will be available for Sonic the Hedgehog. Email and chat rooms will also be up and running from the word go.

Now, continuing coverage from Excite and Reuters:

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Sega of America, a U.S. unit of Japan's Sega Enterprises Ltd., Wednesday said the videogame equipment maker picked telephone giant AT&T Corp. to provide Internet access for its new Dreamcast game console. The highly anticipated Dreamcast, to be launched next month, will be the first gaming console capable of logging on to the Internet, with a 56 kilobit modem and a price of $199.

In a conference call, Sega said Dreamcast customers could sign up to AT&T's WorldNet Internet service under several plans, including a standard plan of 150 hours a month for a monthly fee of $19.95, or unlimited access for $21.95.

Sega said the first Dreamcast game, Sonic Adventure, would have online components. It added that full online gaming -- in which players compete against each other on the Internet -- would not be available until sometime next year.

Monday, Sega said it had taken more than 200,000 pre-orders for Dreamcast, which it hopes will propel it ahead of rival console makers Nintendo Co. Ltd. and Sony Corp.

In addition to Internet access, Dreamcast will be the first console fitted with a 128-bit processor for speedy graphics display. Sega is promoting the machine in the United States with a $100 million marketing campaign.

Thanks to Andy Wolan for tipping Sonic HQ News on the excite story. More updates throughout the evening as I get them.

No DC in Australia until October! - Tristan 5:53pm CST, 8-3-99
Guess what Australian Sega fans, you don't get your DCs for at least another two months! Here's an official statement from Steve O' Leary of Sega Ozisoft courtesy Segaweb:

Let me just post an official reply to the delay rumours for Dreamcast. The Dreamcast will now go on sale in October 1999. The reasons for this action are quite simple and are as follows.

    1. Customising the browser disc for use in Australia has taken longer than expected.

Sega is in an incredibly unique situation where they are launching the first on-line console that will offer the user full Internet access, including web browsing, sending and receiving email and on-line gaming. This takes a great deal more effort and planning than just launching a standard console, including liaising with an Internet service provider, developing a 'plug and play' operating system and setting up a huge network that can cater for over 200,000 users in the first year. The unique situation for Sega also extends to the fact that they are launching the console in the US and Europe in the same month, and that even with this incredible workload Sega are currently working 24/7 to ensure that the launch of the Dreamcast is an absolute success in both territories.

Australia and New Zeland are also in a unique situation where their telecommunications system is different from the UK, Europe and Japan, so additional modifications have to be made to the browser disc to ensure that the console is fully Internet compatible day 1. Dreamcast is currently facing the largest launch ever for a games console, with over 2.4 million consoles pre-ordered in the US alone. Demands like this obviously place a strain on the company as a whole, but as I mentioned, they are doing their best to ensure that the Dreamcast is a success in all territories. With they systems current specs, Internet abilities and large range of launch titles, its a safe bet to day that they will achieve this goal.

With these factors in mind, OziSoft have decide to delay the console's launch until October'99 so that the console will be fully Internet compatible at launch with a 'plug and play' browser disc that allows even the most computer illiterate user to browse the web with ease. Our decision was further strengthened by the fact that Sega Europe had decided to only have around 5 games at launch and had adopted a strategy where they would release games every week rather than all at once.

While we don't disagree with this strategy, the option of delaying the console a month because of the browser disc modifications will ensure that the console has 10 games day 1, as well as games being released every week until Christmas.

Please understand that OziSoft are completely dedicated to the Dreamcast becoming the success in Australia and New Zealand that it will be in the rest of the world.

We have the best technology, and most importantly the best games. Be rest assured that OziSoft has the best marketing team on-board who will do justice to the great system that Sega have created for you, the gamer.

    DC Orders top 200,000! - Tristan 5:53pm CST, 8-2-99
Next Generation is reporting that the Dreamcast has broken 200,000 pre-orders, setting a new American industry record. In the first 30 days of launch, 300,000 DCs are expected to be sold. 1 million sold is expected by the end of 1999, and 1.5 million by March 31, 1999.

These are impressive numbers, but what will be really impressive is if these numbers hold true.
