Is now a father! Congrats from Sonic HQ and all of us Sonic fans Manny! And hope you come back to draw the main Knuckles stories someday.
|
Two Short News - MerlinPwr email 7:00pm CST, 3-30-99 |
1) The guy in the satellite is not THE Robotnik. Ken Penders has said THE Robotnik is dead/gone. Too bad. We're probably looking at Robo-Robotnik coming back in issue 74.
2) Kedzie K's website (tSf) became the 2nd Sonic site (behind us) to hit 100,000 yesterday.

Bad News For Australia. - Zifei 3:02pm CST, 3-29-99 |
Some information leaked out of Sega Ozisoft about the launch of Dreamcast in Australia and New Zealand, which would be 9-9-99. First the bad news, it'll cost 499 Australian ($310 US), way too much, no wonder Ozisoft is classified as the worst Sega subcompany. Now the good news is that Sonic Adventure will be a launch title.
|
Fan-fic Week... - Zifei 3:00pm CST, 3-29-99 |
This week had been aswome for Sonic fan-fic readers. Dan Drazen finally returned to the fan-fic scene with his short story Back Upon Itself. Not only that, but Robert Brown and Francis Tolbert also finished their masterpiece: ARMAGEDDON at Alessandro Sanasi's fan-fic page. If you still haven't read them, do it now!

Sonic Underground. - Espiogirl email 6:57pm CST, 3-28-99 |
As I was searching for more things about Sonic Underground (using
"Northern Light" as the search engine), I click on a link that looked
intresting and it took me somewhere and I saw some stuff about B.K.N.
(Best Kids Network) and I saw that Sonic Underground is going
on [BKN] sometime in July (also three other new cartoons but I don't
know what). Here's the address.
Hmm..I emailed Sega about a week ago asking when the cartoon will be out, and they still hasn't replied yet...maybe I should sent the mail directly to Bernie Stolar.

DC US Price? - Zifei 3:40pm CST, 3-25-99 |
According to GameFan, Toys 'R' Us has set the price of Dreamcast at $199.99. Of course, Sega hasn't even touched the subject yet, so we don't know if that's a fact. But we know for sure that the Dreamcast will come with a 56K modem and one controller, what else, we're still waiting to hear.
|
Sonic #74 Preview. - Zifei 3:42pm CST, 3-24-99 |
In this issue, we finally find out who the mistery character is, according to the preview:
Cover
Written by Karl Bollers, art by Steven Butler and Pam Eklund.
"Don't Call It A Comeback." The intrigue continues as Sonic and the Freedom Fighters return to Knothole Village to
find only his parents there. Where did everyone else go? Fed up, Sonic and his pals take off for outer space in
search of answers and the culprit behind their friends' disappearance. But once they find out who the
village-napper is, they might wish they'd never asked.
Start guessing...is it Robotnik? Or is it Robo-Robotnik? Or is it someone else? The truth is out there...
|
Knuckles #28 Preview. - Zifei 3:42pm CST, 3-24-99 |
Wohoo! Judging from it's cover, Charmy's back with a girlfriend for this issue! And the preview:
Written by Ken Penders, art by Chris Allan and Andrew Pepoy.
"The First Date (Part Three)." Knuckles is nervous as his big date with Julie-Su approaches, and asks his mother
for dating advice. His confidence is restored, but not for long: his dreams are shattered when Julie-Su changes
plans. Is this the end of romance for everyone's favorite echidna, or does his gal pal just have something else up
her sleeve?
Remember, this is also the issue of Knuckles 16th B-day, so let's all hope Chirs Allan delivers, as he's work on K#26 doesn't look too hot.
|
A Tale Of Two Hedgehogs... - Zifei 3:40pm CST, 3-24-99 |
Thanks to Detroit News, we now can bring in previews for future issues a few days earlier. But anyway, it looks like Archie will go for a Sonic Underground crossover in Super Sonic Special #10:
SSS#10 - Cover
Written by Mike Gallagher and Karl Bollers, art by Dave Manak, Dan DeCarlo, Jim Valentino and Harvey
Mercadoocasio.
"Some Enchantra Evening (Part Two)." Picking up where May's Sabrina The Teenage Witch #28 left off, the action
continues as a mind-cntrolled Sonic has invaded Westbridge to do Enchantra's bidding. Will he snap out of it, or
will Sabrian have to use every trick in her magical arsenal to stop the onslaught? As if things couldn't get any
worse, Enchantra left the portal to Sonic's home planet, Mobius open who knows what diabolical super-villains
may follow Sonic into Sabrina's world? "Zone Wars: A Tale Of Two Hedgehogs." Featuring the cast of Sonic
Underground. You're not seeing double you're just seeing a crossover between the Sonic that's everyone's come
to grow and love and the Sonic who's starring in the new Sonic animated TV series this fall. And that's the only
Sonic on view. It all starts when Sonic goes zone-hopping in pursuit of Evil Sonic, who's been impersonating Sonic
to retrieve Giant Borg components for a fiendish plot. Along the way, he lands smack-dab in the middle of Sonic
Underground's world where Sonic, his sister Sonia and his brother Manic are rock stars. This alternate Sonic and
his friends are swept into the adventure, and even run up against a Robotnik from their world. Can the blue blur
save his guitar-slinging double? Will a new hero be born this day?
From this spoiler, we learn two things:
1) Sonic Underground is coming this fall or around that time table instead of mid-April as we have hoped.
2) Archie would want to use this issue to see it they have enough support to extend a Sonic Underground series (which I don't think they do guessing from fan reactions on the net).

SA In Archie... - Zifei 6:27pm CST, 3-23-99 |
Ken Penders today gave out some hints on which issues would feature Sonic Adventure storylines (and answer the question who Tikal [the echidna girl] is):
You'll have to wait until SONIC #79 through 81, KNUCKLES #33 through 35, and SONIC SUPER SPECIAL #12 for the
answers to all your questions.
SSS#12 is going to be the Sonic Adventure special?! Hmm...that means Knuckles: Twenty Years Later would be delayed again...

Gamefan Reviews SA! - Zifei 9:14pm CST, 3-20-99 |
One of my favorite gaming magazines (besides Gamers' Republic), GameFan, just reviewed Sonic Adventure in their latest issue (in stores now!). And boy, they covered the game as far as you can cover it! Pages and pages of infomation and screens. And every reviewer gave Sonic Adventure a 100% and discribed it as "the best thing since burger & fries!" That's the highest any game has recieved since Zelda:TooT. So go check out the magazine now!
|
Mammoth Mogul? - Zifei 9:30pm CST, 3-19-99 |
Ken said today that:
Mammoth Mogul will be reappearing, but not all the details have been worked out yet, so more than that I can't say.
Wonder how that's going to happen, last I checked, that elephant is still in the Master Emerald.
|
Lara + Wyn... - Zifei 9:29pm CST, 3-19-99 |
Since Ken Penders said before that Lara and Locke will never come together again, so when will Lara and Wyn get married? Ken answers the question:
I'd like to go on the record stating that Locke and Lara never again reunite as a couple.
They may interact, but only on a limited basis, and only because Knuckles - their son - is involved. Lara is slated to marry
Wyn, and that story is slated to take place some time before issue #50, and everyone is invited, naturally.
My guess would be between #43-#46, as every issue before and after are filled up.

Tokyo Game Show Starts! - Zifei 3:59pm CST, 3-19-99 |
Tokyo Game Show Spring '99 started today in Japan. We might see some surprises from Sega at this show, or we might now. But whatever the case, stayed tuned. Next up is E3 in late May, that's where we'll see how the public in the US will view Sonic Adventure and Dreamcast.

Paul Castiglia To Leave Archie! - Zifei 3:57pm CST, 3-19-99 |
Paul Castiglia, the first writer, supporter of the Sonic comic, and the current Promotional Director at Archie, is going to leave Archie Comics to pursue a better job. Here's what he said:
Greetings, all. Paul Castiglia here. I apologize for the form letter,
however,
since I've made many friends and acquaintances here online, I thought
it might
be the best way to spread the news of my imminent departure from Archie
Comics.
Since January, 1990, I've been on staff at Archie, wearing several hats
including Manager Of Direct Sales, Promotional Director, Archivist, New
Product
Development, occasional Editor and Archie Website content provider. I
also
did some freelance writing for them from time to time. I'm leaving to
pursue
a career at Arcotoys, which is a division of Mattel based in New York.
I will be a copywriter-- strike that-- THE copywriter for all their
packaging,
catalog, website, ads, etc. (with occasional copy farmed out to
freelancers
when the workload is overloaded). The benefits are tremendous, and
I'll also
have the opportunity to submit and develop new product ideas, which is
an
opportunity only open to Mattel employees. So I'm excited. At the
same time,
I'm a little melancholy because I've spent a great deal of time at
Archie,
learned so much and met so many people. But I do not intend to leave
comics
behind entirely. Archie has assured me I can continue to write stories
for
them on a freelance basis and I've also contacted a few other editors
at other
publishers. So perhaps my name will continue to appear in Archie
publications
in the future. My last day at Archie will be Friday, April 9th.
No word yet on who will replace him.

Richard's Got A Page! - Zifei 6:40pm CST, 3-18-99 |
I was pretty surprised to find this, but it seems that Sonic music composer, Richard Jacques, have a home page! Nothing new is revealed about his future projects, but we do get a look at his Sega studio in the UK. Click here to goto his page.

Elias' Age Question... - Zifei 3:40pm CST, 3-17-99 |
In Knuckles #24's Q&As, Sonic Editor Justin Freddy said that Elias was five years old when he crashed on the Floating Island, but he didn't look five in the comic...Ken Penders explains:
Here's the straight scoop. When working on THE FORBIDDEN ARC storyline, it was always my intent that Elias was older
then Sally, even if they were twins and it was a matter of him emerging first. Upon discussing the Sally's brother when the
storyline was first proposed, Justin automatically decided Elias was older, but at that point not sure by how much. (He also
asked me if I had a name, and if not, since Karl would be handling the character much more than I he asked if Karl could
contribute suggestions. Since I hadn't any specific name in mind, it was Karl who came up with Elias, which we all liked.)
During the production of KNUCKLES #19 through 21, Manny had decided he could no longer handle full-length stories on a
regular basis because of his job at Nickelodeon, so some things got overlooked while we were revamping everything in order
to keep the production schedule on track. One of those things was that Elias should have been depicted as a toddler instead of
an infant when he left the Floating Island.
Regarding the letters page in question, Justin now admits he goofed in saying Elias was five when he should have said he was two or three at most.
Hope this clears it up for everyone...

SatAM at Blockbuster - Vector 11:19am CST, 3-17-99 |
Yesterday I was in Blockbuster Video and noticed a SatAM episode ("Hooked on Sonics"). It was on the same shelf as AoStH. I don't know if the rest of the Blockbuster franchises carry SatAM, but I doubt that the store near my house is the only one.

Dan Is Back! - Zifei 8:35pm CST, 3-16-99 |
Dan as in Dan Drazen, and he's going to get back to the Sonic fan-fic writing business! Here's what he said today:
I had no idea when I'd resume writing Sonic fanfic. I also had no idea
that it would be today. But I REALLY couldn't have guessed that what
would
make me want to do it would be a monumental screw-up on Archie's part.
That screw up is Knuckles #24, read his review of that issue to learn why.

Paul Castiglia Comments. - Zifei 8:32pm CST, 3-16-99 |
Paul Castiglia, manager of sales and promotion, replied to the harsh critiques about the Sonic Super Specials:
I'm writing concerning Sonic crossovers in general, and the
Sonic/Sabrina
crossover in particular. Here's the deal from where we sit at Archie:
the
48-page specials serve a function. They allow us a venue wherein we
can do
the stories Sega wants us to do which have specific appeal to younger
fans.
This includes crossovers. Simply put, you should consider these
stories
like the DC Comics "Elseworlds" stories. In other words, they are
primarily
"What If?" stories that should not affect the regular continuity of the
Sonic universe as portrayed in the monthly Sonic comic books.
We feel this
effectively allows us to do stories that ARE continuity-based in the
monthly
Sonic comic. You might say the 48-page specials are a "necessary evil"
that
allow the monthly Sonic comic series to exist as its own entity, with
its own
continuity, and where more serious subject matter can be brought up
from time
to time. The bottom line: No [one] HAS to buy the 48-page specials--
no one
is forcing you. You do so at your own will. If you think they're too
babyish,
simply save your money and just buy the monthly Sonic series. Leave the
48-page specials to the many kids who buy, read and enjoy them. Hope
this
makes sense to everyone...
Wait a min, I thought that the Sonic/Sabrina crossover was suppose to effect the regular series...

Sonic/Sally Relationship... - Zifei 8:30pm CST, 3-16-99 |
Ken recently commented on Ron's Sonic list about what will happen to Sonic and Sally's relationship:
In fact, we've begun setting up things to allow us to explore Sally's and Sonic's relationship much deeper than we ever have. While you may not agree with SONIC-SALLY POLL we're conducting at the moment, one of the main reasons we're doing it is to help us make decisions regarding their relationship. Some things you'll definitely like, other things you may not agree with, but we really are thinking this through.
I promise you this, though, Sally is not dead, she will not be killed off, nor has a clone assumed her position or ever will. I do learn from my mistakes at times.
That mistake Ken talked about is none other than End Game.

KnuxCom Going Down! - Zifei 8:31pm CST, 3-15-99 |
Well, it's official, one of the top five Sonic sites is heading down the drain come April 2, 1999. Here's the words from SharpKnux himself, head of KnuxCom:
I have decided that as of April 2, 1999, I will close down all of KnuxCom. As of currently, the only page that resides on KnuxCom is the Sonic Page. So by April 2, that page will be gone. Why am I doing this? Well, for a simple two reasons: I lost interest in doing a general Sonic site, and there are plenty of Sonic sites out there that are much better than mine (and I figure, it's too late to "win" back fans of the site). I was going to create a page called The Sonic Database, but those plans have been cancelled. Sorry.
So what's going to be here instead? Well as of April 2, 1999, I plan on changing KnuxCom into SharpKnux's Art Studio, which is simply going to be an art site featuring my artwork (and perhaps a fan art archive). I have been wanting to make a site like this for a long time, but simply haven't had the time to do so while trying to complete KnuxCom's other pages. I figure I will have more interest in my site if my site revolves around my favorite hobby: art. I will put up more info on the new site when the time comes.
I will keep the Sonic Page link open from here until April 2, which is when I will delete the enitre page. Take what you want from the site, but remember to give me credit for what is mine in there, and do not copy anything word for word either. Anyone hear of plagerism? It's illegal... Oh yes, one more thing. Please do not flame me or send me nasty complaints about my decision. It's final, and I'm the one paying for the account. =)
I would like to thank everyone who supported KnuxCom in the past two years. This would be everyone who has linked to this site (and I encourage you to keep linking ^_^), anyone who has submitted anything to my site, and any one who just comes by and visits. Thanks again, and, as I always say when I put messages to a close: Later!
Well, it was good while it lasted, ever since 1996. Hopefully, another site will rise up and take its place.

Sonic #76 Art... - Zifei 1:36pm CST, 3-14-99 |
Sonic the Hedgehog comic letterer Jeff Powell recently commented on the quality of art in Sonic #76, when James Fry (SSS#8 debut) takes over from Steven Butler:
I just wanted to make a comment about upcoming SONIC issues, especially
issue
#76. I got the first few pages to work on and I just want to say that
James
Fry did a GREAT job on them. I don't plan on giving anything away story
wise,
but as far as the art's concerned, there's a huge manga-esque look/feel
to them.
BUT I'm sure that the "Sonic purists" on [Ron's] list will disagree when
they see
it and say that the characters aren't on model to the now
[NON-EXISTENT]
Sat AM show.
Hmm..."character aren't on model" compared to the SatAM? Personally, I would even consider Spaz's art off model compared to the SatAM. So I wouldn't worry too much about that, considering James Fry did an excellent job in SSS#8.

Sonic Underground Stuff! - Duo P. email 6:56pm CST, 3-12-99 |

Sonic MP3s... - Zifei 5:08pm CST, 3-12-99 |
Well, ever since Simplenet made Sonic sites take off their MP3 files, we have had a lack of Sonic MP3s across the net. Well, thanks to SegaNet Media, now we have huge batches of Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, S&K, and Sonic Adventure MP3s. Click here to check them out!
|
Go to Jack In The Box NOW! - Vector 1:31am CST, 3-12-99 |
As reported earlier, Jack In The Box has Sonic and Knuckles toys, as well as Ecco and Bug. However, they are also selling 4 SEGA PC titles for only $1.99 each! The available titles are Sonic & Knuckles Collection, Sonic 3D Blast, Ecco the Dolphin, and Bug.
If you don't have Sonic 3 & Knuckles, then this is a great opportunity to get this excellent game. Even if you do have it, the S&K Collection CD is well worth the cost because it contains a large archive of Sonic art and music, including the Sonic Mega CD soundtrack. I'm not sure what extras are available on the S3D CD.
|
Yuji Naka Interview! - Zifei 5:51pm CST, 3-11-99 |
I was checking the news archives today (yes, even I have to reread news or I'll forget...), and found that I forgot to post a Yuji Naka interview the DC Magazine did back in January. Well, here it is thanks to Sega2000. Naka-san revealed a bunch of interesting stuff in this interview. BTW, when Yuji talk about the Sonic online network, he means the Sonic Adventure VMS (VMU) download games.

Tokyo Game Show. - Zifei 4:30pm CST, 3-10-99 |
The much anticipated Tokyo Game Show Spring 1999 will start on March 19th and end on March 21st. Sega will try to push a lot of Dreamcast hype there. And without a doubt, Sonic will also show up there. Announced Sonic games to show up at the show are Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) and Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn). But we might see some surprises, rumors are that a new Sonic game will also show up. We'll keep you on top of it if there is a new Sonic game announcement.
|
Sonic #71 Release Date! - Zifei 3:17pm CST, 3-9-99 |
Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog comic will be released to comic stores across America on the 24th of March, 1999.
|
SA Sales... - Zifei 3:10pm CST, 3-9-99 |
Sonic Adventure sales in Japan for the week of Feb 22 to Mar 1 was under 7,500 units, this prevents the game from entering the top 30 best selling games chart.
|
One-And-A-Half Play In SA. - Zifei 4:39pm CST, 3-8-99 |
If you haven't heard already, Sonic Adventure does have one-and-a-half play, much like Sonic 2. Here's a quote to better explain it:
When you are playing Sonic's action stages and Tails is on the screen, a second player can control Tails with a second controller. Any rings Tails collects will be added to Sonic's totals. Be careful to not make Tails break open any shields, invincibilities or One Up item boxes as those will not be added to Sonic and will be wasted.
This feature may seem trivial to most people, but you'd be surprised how much fun it can be trying to outrun player one (who's playing Sonic) when you're controlling Tails.
This is pretty good news, as this is a unique feature in Sonic games and platform games in general.
|
Sonic And Star Wars... - Zifei 10:14am CST, 3-7-99 |
What do they have in common? Besides both starting with the letter S, and both appearing on the upcoming Dreamcast, what else? How about the movie The Phantom Menance? Yep, it is confirmed by several sources (though not official) that Sega's marketing plan for the Dreamcast in the states will have a tie in with the upcoming Star Wars movie. That said, rumor has it that it'll be a short clip of Sonic Adventure commercial just before the movie starts. That, will for sure get people exited. So Sonic probably will, in a sense, make it to the big screen.
|
Strange... - Zifei 11:34pm CST, 3-6-99 |
Even though Sonic 3D Blast was released about 2.5 years ago to Sega Saturn, Sega of Japan would still be showing it at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show Spring 99 for the Saturn. Don't know if this is Sonic 3D: Flikies Island, or a new version of Sonic 3D Blast.
|
News Page Additions! - Zifei 7:04pm CST, 3-5-99 |
As you can see, I added some more stuff to the Sonic News Press today. The editorial section is finally up, as well as a poll. The poll will be changed every 2 weeks.

March 10th... - Zifei 3:24pm CST, 3-5-99 |
Even though this is about Sega, you people waiting to buy Sega Dreamcast/with Sonic Adventure might want to know. Sega is making a *BIG* announcement on March 10th. Here are some speculations/rumors of what the thing might be about:
Sega to announce 256-bit Avator system for the 2002, featuring full bumpmapping, phone shading, and ray tracing. With the ability to push 100 million textured polygons (DC: 5 million, PSX2: 13 million). This came from FGNonline.com, they took it off already, maybe it's a bad rumor, or maybe Sega made them take it off.
The dates and games for the US launch will be confirmed.
Sega moving launch date up to May from September.
Please note that these are all rumors right now, and according to a conference call (If you wish to hear the conference replay yourself dial 1-800-685-9482. Passcode 1999) made by SoA's president/CEO Bernie Stolar today, Sega will still aim for Fall, 1999 launch; Sega will begin full marketing in mid-April (that's not far away); and there would be 10-12 launch games.

Another Sonic Special! - Zifei 3:21pm CST, 3-4-99 |
Keb Penders today gave out some hint about a special Sonic project coming up:
If you want proof of how I really feel about SONIC himself, wait'll you the special that Spaz and I are working on. It's so
special, it's gonna rock Sonic fandom for a loop when they see it. But don't take my word for it. You'll have to wait until it
comes out, which won't be until the end of the year most likely. More than that I can't say, as all of us at Archie signed a blood
oath on this one.
Nice to know that Spaz would finally be drawing another special. Wonder what this could be.

Solly made a translation of what the characters are saying in the Sonic Underground videos that were released by Allessandro Sanasi. Unfortunately, the literal translation doesn't make much sense in English.

Interesting Info... - Ray email 6:31pm CST, 3-3-99 |
Here's a couple of things Ray have learned from Ken Penders:
1) Nack was a member of the Chaotix team a long time ago.
How and why did he quit we don't know. But this is sounding very much like the Fleetway version.
2) Mighty has changed A LOT since the past few issues. He has adapted to be more of a "tough" guy than he originally was.
Could Ken already be trying to create the environment for the the introduction of Ray into the Chaotix?

If you still haven't seen this yet (it was on the net since about 3 days ago), here's the artist list again for the upcoming Female Furries Super Special set for SSS#11 from Ken Penders:
The PRINCESS SALLY story "ASSENSION" is pencilled by Jim Valentino.
The BUNNIE RAB-BOT story "UPGRADE" is pencilled by James Fry.
The JULIE-SU story "SHADOWS" is pencilled by Pat Spaziante.
The HERSHEY story "COMMANDO" is pencilled by Yours Truly.
And if I may introduce the first female penciller to the Sonic art team line-up, Colleen Doran will be pencilling the LUPE story
"FAMILY", which ties up all the events from SONIC #67 through 69.
Let's all hope Colleen Doran can get in, because she's a pretty well known and good artist.
